How to read the results spreadsheet

Where can I download the response data to a questionnaire?

You can download an Excel (.xslx) file that contains the full survey results from Results > Download data. The file includes responses to all questions in your questionnaire, including coordinates for the map-based answers.

Can you explain the structure of the sheet?

The Excel file has several tabs. The first one is always called Respondents. It contains the answers to all non-map questions in the order in which they appear in the questionnaire. Each respondent is given a Respondent ID when they access the questionnaire. It is listed in the very first column. One row = one person's answers.

The other tabs are for the map questions you had in the questionnaire. Each tab contains the answers to one map question and any questions in the associated pop-up.

What do "Submitted" and "First active time" mean?

  • Submitted = Whether or not the respondent made it to the last page of the questionnaire and exited it by clicking "Done". If this column says TRUE it means that they did, FALSE that they did not.
  • First active time = The time when the respondent answers their first question. The time zone is UTC+0

In the last columns of the sheet, you can also find Submitted time (the date and time when the respondent submitted their responses), Last active time (last time they responded to any questions), and other additional data (e.g. Publication consent,  Participatory consent, Approved By Moderator, Hidden By Moderator, Language Code)

How each question type is shown in the results Excel

Questions are in the same order they were in the finished questionnaire.

A blank cell indicates that the respondent did not interact with the question at all

Choose one, Poll, Date Picker, Number, Slider and Open question

The question is shown as the title for the column and the answers are listed below it.

E.g. in the example below, the first respondent did not answer the question at all (blank), the second chose Northern Major District and the third Western Major District.

Responses to questions where the respondent can choose multiple options, such as Choose multiple and Multiple choice grid, are presented in multiple columns.

Choose multiple

  • The column title features the question + one answer option. TRUE means that the respondent picked that option and FALSE that they did not.

Multiple choice grid

  • The column title features the question + one row option. The cells show which answer option (e.g. on a scale between Excellent – Poor) the respondent picked for each row option.

Ranked choice

  • The column title features the question + one answer option. The cells list the rank the respondent chose (e.g. "6" means they ranked the item sixth on the list).

Budgeting

  • The column title features the question + one answer option. The cells show how many times the item was chosen.

Geobudgeting

  • The first column lists the coordinates of each item that the respondent chose; their order mirrors their order in the questionnaire, with empty brackets indicating that item was not chosen.
  • The following columns are each titled with the question + one answer option. The cells show how many times each item was chosen.

Map questions

Map questions (other than geobudgeting) all have their own sheets/tabs in the Excel.

Each map question sheet shows:

  • Respondent ID of the person who left the answer
  • Submitted = Whether or not the respondent made it to the last page of the questionnaire and exited it by clicking "Done". If this column says TRUE it means that they did, FALSE that they did not.
  • First active time = The time when the respondent answers their first question. The time zone is UTC+0
  • Lat = the latitudinal coordinates of the map marking
  • Lon = the longitudinal coordinates of the map marking
  • WKT = the coordinates in WKT format
  • GeoJSON = the coordinates in GeoJSON format
  • Zoom = the zoom level at which the response was submitted

Responses to questions in a linked pop-up are also included in the sheet.
