Add map, image or color backgrounds

Each page of your maptionnaire can have a different background –  you can use any of the four different types of backgrounds:

  • Maps
    • System maps are included in every subscription. They are OpenStreetMap-based maps from MapTiler and Mapbox, and include satellite and topographical maps.
    • Own basemaps refers to maps that you bring to Maptionnaire. They can be WMTS, WMS, Bing, Mapbox or Maptiler based. To use these in your questionnaire, add them first to Materials. The maps should be in WGS84.
    • Map overlays are any additional maps that you want to overlay on top of a more complete map (e.g. a satellite map). E.g. a map overlay could highlight project sites on the map with points. You can bring your own overlays to Maptionnaire as shapefiles (shp), geoJSON, WFS, GeoTIFF or Vector Tile Service. Add them first to Materials. All layers except shapefiles should be in WGS84. You can also create maps with points, lines, areas or grids in Create a map, or add an image to a map (georefencing) in Materials.
  • Background images, which you can upload to Materials
  • Interactive images, which are image files that respondents can pin and draw on (e.g. a vision image). They need to first be uploaded to Materials.
  • Color

Add backgrounds to your questionnaire

  1. Go to the first page of the questionnaire. Select Map and layout on top of the page.

  2. In Page type, choose the type of background that you want to use.

  3. If you are adding a map or a background/interactive image, select them from the drop-downs. If you want a simple color background, choose it from the color selector.
  4. If adding a map or an interactive image, define the view and zoom level that you want respondents to see when they open that page on the right side of the screen. Click Set to save the view. The bullseye symbol on the map shows you the centre of the currently saved map view. It won't appear in the published questionnaire.
  5. Repeat the same on other pages of the questionnaire.

Use the same map on all pages, delete or hide map from view/map menu:

The Actions menu next to each map you select allows you to:

  • Select the same map to be used on all pages with map backgrounds
  • Remove the map
  • Hide by default – only show the map layer if the respondent chooses it from the map layer menu.
  • Hide from layer menu – show the layer on the map but hide it from the layer menu so the respondent cannot toggle it off.

Layout and alignment

The questionnaire form (the area that contains the questions) can be narrow or wide.

On mapping/interactive image pages the form is always on the left side of the screen. On pages with a color or background image, the form can be aligned to the left, right or center of the page.

The layout is automatically optimized for smartphone screens.

If you want to use the same layout and/or alignment throughout the survey, click Make default.
