Map, image and color backgrounds

Each page of your maptionnaire can have a different background –  you can use any of the four different types of backgrounds:

  1. You can use any of the maps in our map library (system maps) or your own maps and images. If you want to use your own images and maps, upload them first to Materials
  2. Go to the first page of the questionnaire. Select Map and layout on top of the page.

Select the map layer from Add layer under one of the follow categories

System maps: The library of maps that is provided in each Maptionnaire subscription. The maps come from Mapbox and MapTiler. Maptiler Streets is on the background of each new maptionnaire by default, but you don't need to use it.

Own basemaps: WMS, WMTS, XYZ, Bing, Mapbox, Maptiler maps that you upload to Materials. Note! If the map contains a limited number of features (e.g. a shapefile), then it is not a basemap but a Map overlay.

Map overlays: Shapefiles, geoJSONs, geoTIFFs and WFS layers are called Map overlays. Maps that you create in Maptionnaire with the Create a map of Georeference functions are also overlays.

    2. Choose whether you want to use metric (km) or imperial (miles) as the map scale measurements.

Find the starting/default view of the map from the window on the right (the "bullseye" symbol shows the midpoint) and click Set to save it. Preview the page.

Use the same map on all pages, delete or hide map from view/map menu:

The Actions menu next to each map you select allows you to:

    • Select the same map to be used on all pages with map backgrounds
    • Remove the map
    • Hide by default – only show the map layer if the respondent chooses it from the map layer menu.
    • Hide from layer menu – show the layer on the map but hide it from the layer menu so the respondent cannot toggle it off.
    Background image

A background image is any image file (e.g. PNG, JPG) that you want to have on the background of a questionnaire page.

    1. Upload the image to Materials.

    2. Go to the questionnaire page > Map and layout > choose Background image.
    3. Select the image from the drop-down menu called Add image.

You can set the same image to be used on all pages under Actions.

    Interactive image

Interactive images are image files (e.g. PNG, JPG) that you want the respondents to comment on by placing map points or drawing on top of the image. These could be for example building blueprints or visions of a plan change. Note that you can now georeference (place on top of map) image files in Maptionnaire.

In contrast to maps, interactive images do not contain any coordinate data. You can analyze the data collected in this way in Maptionnaire's built-in analysis tool. The recommended dimensions for the image are max. 1920×1080 (the most common laptop screen size), min. 1280×800 (budget laptop screen size).

    1. Upload the image file to Materials.
    2. Go to the questionnaire page > Map and layout > choose Interactive image.
    3. Select the image from the drop-down menu called Add image
    4. Find the starting/default view of the image from the window on the right (the "bullseye" symbol shows the midpoint) and click Set to save it. Preview the page.
    Color

Simply choose the color from the color selector or by using a color code.

Layout and alignment

The questionnaire form (the area that contains the questions) can be narrow or wide.

On mapping/interactive image pages the form is always on the left side of the screen. On pages with a color or background image, the form can be aligned to the left, right or center of the page.

The layout is automatically optimized for smartphone screens.

If you want to use the same layout and/or alignment throughout the survey, click Make default.
