Integrate Mapbox layers into your survey

What is Mapbox?

Mapbox is a location data platform that produces maps for different digital applications. In order to use it, you need to register at Mapbox.

Please note that this article refers to Mapbox maps that you create using your own Mapbox subscription. If you are looking for instructions on how to access and use the Mapbox maps that we offer as part of every subscription (=basemaps/system maps), please see this article.

Set up:

  1. In the survey, go to Page settings. Under Basemaps click New and select 'Mapbox'.

  2. Enter the Mapbox server URL. You can find it by going to Mapbox Studio and choosing the map you want to use. Then click Share your style and a new window should open. Scroll down to Developer resources and choose Third Party. Pick CARTO from the drop-down menu and copy the Integration link. This is the URL you can enter to Maptionnaire.
  3. Once Maptionnaire has established a connection to the server, the map should be visible in the area that was grey in the previous window. You can now edit the settings:
    1. Name the map.
    2. Set the Zoom range for the map. This should be the range for which the map server can produce tiles. Setting an incorrect range can make your map load slowly or not show up at all. Most servers support the range 1 to 19, and in general you should not need to change the lower end value of the range. If the map server supports very detailed views, you can increase the upper end of the range up to a maximum of 25. If the map layer disappears at high zoom levels, try lowering the upper end of the range.
  4. Finally, click Create item, or Save if you are editing the settings after creating the item.
  5. In the survey, set the default map view for the map in the survey. Preview and adjust if needed.
