What is a shapefile?
A shapefile is a geospatial file format containing vector data, such as polygons (areas, borders), lines and points.
Are there any requirements for the shapefile?
The coordinate system of the shapefile does not matter, but we recommend making sure that the combined size of shapefiles on the same survey page is reasonable.
The shapefile(s) should be uploaded to Maptionnaire in a compressed .zip folder that contains the following files: .shp, .shx, .dbf, .prj. The same folder can contain multiple shapefiles.
Upload a shapefile to Maptionnaire:
-
In the survey, go to Map and layout. Under Map overlays, click New and select Esri shapefile.
-
Click Upload and select the compressed shapefile folder with at least the following files: .shp, .shx, .dbf, .prj.
-
Write the name of the layer in the Public title – it will be shown when the respondent hovers their cursor over the map (unless you give it another name in the legend).
-
If you want to add place names to the map, choose the correct attribute column under Feature labels and turn on Show feature labels. If you have a lot of overlapping labels, consider turning on Declutter labels. It's also possible to change the visual appearance and placement of the labels.
-
Scroll down in the editing window to set the color, size and opacity of the features (style is not automatically transferred to Maptionnaire). For lines and polygons, the stroke can also be dashed.
You can also style the features by attribute.
Similarly, if the same folder contains multiple layers, you can style them differently.
- Click Save to finish. It's now stored in Materials and can be used in all this team's surveys.
In this video you'll see how a shapefile is downloaded to Maptionnaire, modified in Materials and brought into a questionnaire:
