Make map responses public and allow others to up or downvote them

Available with Communicate+ subscription levels

This feature makes it possible for the respondent to see what places others have marked on the map, read their comments and up- or downvote them. The responses can be moderated either manually or with the help of AI.

  1. Create the map question and choose the background maps.

  2. Go the page with the map question you want to be public. Go to the question's Extra settings. Switch on Make responses public. All the questions inside a map question's linked popup will also be public.

  3. If you want people to be able to up or downvote the responses, go to Settings > Publication and turn on Allow respondents to vote for responses of others.

  4. Remember to tell respondents that their map comments will be public! In order for their comment to show to others, they need to complete the survey and submit their answers (=click the 'Submit' button on the last page).

Show responses on the last page of the survey

You can also opt to show responses publicly on the last page of the survey instead of on the map question page. In that case, make sure that the background on the last page is a map. Otherwise follow the steps outlined above, but in Settings turn on both Allow public responses and Show public responses by others on last page.

Can I see the upvotes and downvotes in my data?

Yes, in both the analysis tool, and the geoJSON output.

In the Analysis Tool, click on the response where you want to count votes. You'll see a tally of the total upvotes and downvotes for this response.

Use Filters to find out which points received the most votes.

The results in the geoJSON output look like this:

Moderate public responses

When using this feature, it's important to moderate submissions in case a respondent posts something inappropriate.

To access moderation, go to Export > Moderate public responses. Here you can browse responses and hide individual ones using the Hidden toggle. A hidden response is no longer visible to other respondents, but it is still available internally (in the analysis tool and data exports).

To hide an entry, switch on Hide from data

AI Moderation

You can also enable AI to automatically moderate potentially inappropriate responses.

To enable AI moderation, go to the survey's Settings > Publication and turn on Enable AI moderation of public responses.

How it works:
  • Responses to questions marked as public are sent to AWS, where an AI model reviews them for inappropriate content.
  • Flagged responses are automatically hidden from public view.
  • You can review the reason a response was flagged — and manually unhide it if needed — in Export > Moderate public responses section.

Scope and limitations:
  • AI moderation only applies to open questions and uploaded files or images. Other question types are not reviewed.
  • If a response is flagged, any associated map question response will not be automatically hidden — you must hide it manually.
