Analyze Pop-up map or Select map responses

How many times was each map feature (=point, line, area, cell...) selected?
  1. Go to Analyze > Map responses

  2. Select the map question by clicking the eye-symbol. The features should appear as a choropleth map, in which the color of the feature signifies how many times it was clicked.

The number you see on top of each feature indicates the times it was clicked (remove them by toggling off Show counts).

The features that were not clicked by any respondents are automatically excluded from the map (to show them, toggle off Remove count = 0 from map)

In our survey we asked people to pick an area from the map and then answer questions about it in a pop-up. How can I see what was answered in each area?
  1. Go to Analyze > Map responses

  2. Select the map question by clicking the eye-symbol.

  3. Click an area. A pop-up opens with charts and lists showing the responses of people in the pop-up of that specific area.

I would like to see how people who selected a specific area answered to the other questions in the survey, how do I do that?

You have two options: filter by area ID or use the spatial filter by selecting the area from the map manually. Both features can be found under Filters in the analysis tool.

Filter by ID

  1. Go to the analysis tool and select all questions that you want to create charts for.
  2. Open Filters.

  3. Expand Questions and select the pop-up map/select map question from the drop-down menu.

  4. Choose the ID and/or IDs that you want to filter by.

  5. Click Apply. The charts now show responses only associated with those particular IDs.

What is an ID?

Each individual feature must have an ID in the shapefile or geoJSON that you've used as the basis for the pop-up or select map. The IDs are listed in the attributes of that map file. If you're unsure about what ID corresponds to each feature, go to Materials, check what the file's ID key is, download the map file and look at its attributes in a GIS program. You can always contact us at support@maptionnaire.com for help.

Alternatively, you can use spatial filters to look at responses by people who selected a specific feature on the map

You can now filter responses based on geographic areas.

  1. Toggle on the layers you want to filter by.

  2. Click the Filters button.

  3. In the left column, click Draw on the map.

  4. To start drawing, click on the map. Close the shape to finish. The drawn area does not have to be precise. I.e. If you have multiple features close to each other but only want to filter responses received to one of them, don't try to follow the outlines of that feature, but draw inside its area. This way the shape you draw does not intersect with any other features but only focuses on responses linked to people who selected that specific feature.

  5. Name the area you have drawn.

  6. Once applied, the map will display only responses within that designated area, and all charts will automatically update to reflect data from respondents whose entries intersect that geographic boundary.

You can repeat this process to create multiple spatial filters.

Tip! Using conditions to compare how different groups answered? Make this more efficient by saving each filtered view.

Can I export the map data?
  1. Go to Analyze > Map responses. Click the eye symbol next to the question. The map features should become visible.
  2. Go to the Layers tab.
  3. Select GeoJSON or Shapefile (.shp) as the exported file type.
  4. Select Choropleth map if you want a file that contains the information about how many times each feature was clicked (e.g. one row per feature in the attribute table). Select Individual responses if you want each feature to have its own row in the attribute table.
  5. Click Download.
