Maptionnaire × ArcGIS Pro — Mapping smarter, together

Real-time integration of Maptionnaire data with ArcGIS Online

Ask stakeholders to map on Maptionnaire, and have the data transfer over to your ArcGIS Online account. You can do this by using an API key — no manual data export needed.

How to connect your data:
  1. In the questionnaire editor, go to Settings > API keys and click Add API key. Set an expiration date and click Create.

  2. A list of URLs per type of geometry are generated. Copy the one that corresponds to the geometry type you need. Then go to ArcGIS Online and use the copied link to add a new layer to your map.

After this, when the map is loaded, ArcGIS Online will request the latest version of your data from Maptionnaire. For more detailed instructions, see this article.

Of course, you can also export your data from Maptionnaire to ArcGIS Pro via GeoJSON or an Excel file

After the data has been imported into geodatabase, you can use any geoprocessing or spatial analysis tool you need.

It works the other way too: Host your data in ArcGIS but use it in your Maptionnaire survey

This is especially useful when you have multiple shapefile layers that you want to show, or if you want to use more advanced symbology for vector tiles than what Maptionnaire supports.

Here's how to do it:
  1. Start by creating a map layer in ArcGIS Pro that fits your project's needs.
  2. Symbolize it, set labels and create a Vector Tile Package.
  3. Go to ArcGIS online and create the Vector tile service.
  4. Once the service is published to ArcGIS Online, make sure that it is shared as public.
  5. Then simply copy its URL to Maptionnaire under Materials and use it in questionnaires.

If you are not familiar with creating Vector Tile Services, no worries, read our guide for tips and tricks.

You can also upload your shapefiles from ArcGIS to Maptionnaire

Symbology settings for map overlays are available on the Materials → Edit page, where you can set styles based on attributes and define colors, strokes, and fills.

Here you can read how to style vector map layers based on an attribute.

Map responses typically include fields such as response IDs, choice labels, numeric values, and open-ended text responses. Consider which fields are most useful for your visualization. In the Analysis Tool, you can adjust colors, sizes, icons, opacity, or apply conditional styles based on attributes.

Customer Success Story: Destia Uses Maptionnaire + GIS to Improve Mobility Planning

Destia, Finland's largest infrastructure service company used Maptionnaire during projects such as the Rauma bicycle-parking master plan. They collected thousands of map-based comments from residents, exported the data as shapefiles, and analyzed it in GIS software including ArcGIS Pro. Read customer success story here.

Here's some other tips and tricks on how to work with Maptionnaire data in ArcGIS:

Shaping and sorting your GIS data

When you are working with spatial data, performing data management tasks is usually necessary, especially if you want to merge data collected in Maptionnaire with other datasets.

Typical tasks are:

  • Projecting your data: If the coordinate system differs between datasets, use a projection tool. Here is our guide about different projections.
  • If you need to select responses based on specific attributes or location, here is our guide for you.
  • Enrich your datasets using data gathered with Maptionnaire: Once the data is downloaded from Maptionnaire and imported into a geodatabase with ArcGIS Pro, you can create different join and relate connections between datasets. For a guide on joins and relations, click here.

ArcGIS Pro offers a wide range of data management tools to choose from.

Turning responses into Insights: Spatial joins & aggregations

Using ArcGIS Pro tools like Spatial Join allows you to combine Maptionnaire response data with for example polygon layers like planning zones, service areas or city polygons.

For example you can calculate:

  • Number of points within each polygon
  • Average ratings per service area
  • Summaries of numeric attributes from responses

This way you can turn your raw data into meaningful insights. Read our guide

Share data as service and use it in web apps

If you have customers yourself or you just want to share your findings within the company, you can publish web services from the data collected in Maptionnaire to ArcGIS Online and use the different app builders, such as the Experience Builder or ArcGIS Dashboard to share the information.
