Generate a survey results report using AI

Maptionnaire's analysis tool can generate a written report from your survey results. The report includes an AI-written narrative built from your open-ended answers, plus the charts and map cluster analysis from your analysis views — it is not limited to open text.

Looking for more information on how it works? See this article.

Plan All plans (Collect, Communicate, Enterprise)
Question types used Includes analysis of all question types
Generation time Dependent on the number of questions and amount of respondents, but typically only a couple of minutes
Download formats Downloadable as a .doc/.pdf/.pptx file, or shareable as a link to the online version
Editing Yes — every section can be edited, reordered, or removed after generation, and you can swap in your own tags before regenerating

How to generate it:

  1. Go to the analysis tool. Click the AI symbol and select Generate report automatically. (If you have already generated a report for this survey, select Open report to go back to it.)

  2. Click Generate report.

  3. AI generates the report from your open-ended answers, charts, and map cluster analysis. This might take a couple of minutes. Once ready, the report will open automatically in the browser window:

  4.  Click any section to view what it is based on and to edit (scroll down to read more on this).

  5. You can also edit the style of the report to match it with your brand.

  6. Finally, download the report in one of the available file formats or copy the link to the online format.

How to review the report and edit its content

Nothing in the report is final — every section can be edited, reordered, or removed, and the underlying views are ordinary saved analysis views you can open and change later.

  1. Review and adjust tags. The narrative is written from tags, so check the tags before you trust the narrative. Click a section to see the tags. Click 'Edit view in analysis tool' to take a look at the data it is based on.

  2. Click the open comment question to read ten or so answers and check that the tags look sensible. Use the tag filter above the table to look at one tag at a time — usually the fastest way to spot a tag that's being applied too loosely.

It's also always worth checking the comments that AI did not tag:

  3. If something is off, fix it at either level:

A single answer is tagged wrong: edit its tags directly in the table (or in the response popup on the map) by clicking the pen icon. Manually applied tags behave exactly like AI-applied ones: they filter the map, count in the tag chart, and come along in the Excel export.

The whole set of tags is wrong: click Edit next to the tag group, type the tags you want the answers grouped into, and re-tag. The AI then sorts the answers into your tags instead of its own — useful if you already have a coding frame, a policy vocabulary, or tags from an earlier round of engagement you need this survey to be comparable with.

If you change tags after generating a report, Maptionnaire tells you which sections now describe tags that no longer hold, and offers to refresh them.

  4. You can also change how the charts, maps and open-text answers look in the report. See How to update the charts, maps and open-text answers in the report below.

How to update the charts, maps and open-text answers in the report

Every section of the report is built on a saved view in the analysis tool. To change what a section shows, you edit that view and save it. The report then picks up your changes.

  1. Open the view behind the section. In the report, click the section you want to change. The Behind this section panel opens on the right. Click Edit view in analysis tool.

  2. Make your changes. The analysis tool opens with the section's view selected (you can see its name next to Saved views). Edit it as you would any view:
    • Charts: click a chart to open its edit window. You can, for example, switch between numbers and percentages, change the chart style, show data labels or change the sort order.

    • Maps: in Map responses, turn layers on or off, change their styles (the cog icon), add filters or click Edit legend.

    • Open-text questions: click the question to open the table of answers. Fix a single answer's tags with the pen icon, or click Edit next to the tags to change the whole set of tags and Re-tag the answers.

  3. Save the view. Click Save view and choose Overwrite view. This updates the view that the report section is built on.

Save view dialog with the Overwrite view button
  4. Check the report. Open the report again (click the AI symbol and select Open report). The section now shows your changes. In this example, the chart shows the number of respondents instead of percentages.

If you changed tags, Maptionnaire tells you which sections' text may no longer match and offers to refresh them.

How your data is handled

As of August 2026, Maptionnaire uses Claude Sonnet 4.6, running on Amazon Bedrock — the same AWS infrastructure that hosts the rest of Maptionnaire. The model does not retain your responses after processing them, and does not use them to train models. All AI processing of response data happens in the same AWS region as your data — EU data stays in the EU, US data in the US.
