Choose a survey page background and layout

Every survey page has a background, and the survey form sits on top of it. You choose the background separately for each page: a map, an image or a plain color. The layout settings decide how wide the form is and where it sits on the page.

Click Add page and choose:

  • Map background: for pages with map questions, or when you want to show a map.
  • Non-map background: for intro texts, regular questions and background questions.

You can change the background at any time.

  1. Select the page in the page list on the left.
  2. Click Page settings above the page.
  3. Under Page background, choose the type of background.
Background Use it when…
Map or GIS image The page has map questions, or you want to show a map. You can also layer an image, such as a plan, on top of the map. Responses have coordinates and can be taken to GIS software. See Set up map elements in your survey (Quick guide).
Non-GIS interactive image Respondents should place pins or draw directly on an image that has no geographic location (i.e. not a plan visualisation). Responses don't have coordinates and can't be taken to GIS software. See Use an image as the survey background.
Background image The page has no map questions and you want a decorative image behind the form, for example a photo of the area. See Use an image as the survey background.
Color The page has no map questions and you want a plain background. Pick a color from the color selector or enter a color code.

Have a plan image? Layer it on top of a map instead of using it as an interactive image. That way, responses get geographic coordinates. See Display an image overlay on the map.

Choose the layout

Click the Layout button (the two-arrow icon) above the page:

  • Form layout: Narrow or Wide. A wide form leaves less of the background visible.
  • Form alignment: Left, Center or Right. On map pages, move the form to the side where it covers the least important part of the map.

To use the same setting on every page, click the star next to the value. This makes it the default for the whole survey.

When the survey is viewed on a mobile device, the layout is automatically optimized for the screen.
