Use an image as the survey background

You can use an image as a page background in two ways: as a decorative Background image behind the survey form, or as a Non-GIS interactive image that respondents can draw or place pins on. For an overview of all background types, see Choose a page background and layout.

Background image

A background image can make your survey more attractive and reinforce your brand. Image banks like Unsplash have attractive images on many different themes.

  1. Select the page in the page list and click Page settings above the page.

  2. Under Page background, choose Background image.
  3. Under Background images, pick an image with Add image (if it's already in Materials), or click New to upload one from your computer. The recommended dimensions are max. 1920×1080 (the most common laptop screen size) and min. 1280×800 (budget laptop screen size).

  4. Preview the page. Background images aren't visible to respondents answering on a smartphone. If you want them to see it, add it to the survey form as well.
Non-GIS interactive image

A Non-GIS interactive image is an image (e.g. PNG, JPG) that respondents can draw or place pins on, just like on a map. The image has no geographic location, so responses don't have coordinates. As a rule of a thumb, if you can layer an image on a map, you should – see the chart in this article for additional details.

Before you use an interactive image

  • Think about how you want to use the data. Image files have pixels, not coordinates, so the responses can't be taken to GIS software. You can still look at them in Maptionnaire's analysis tool (example below).
  • Using a plan image? Layer it on a map instead: georeference the image or upload it in vector format (e.g. shp). That way the responses get geographic coordinates. See Set up map elements in your survey.
