Images as survey page backgrounds

Background image

You can elevate your survey and reinforce your brand by adding a background image. Look to online image banks like Unsplash to find attractive images that fit a variety of different themes.

  1. Go to the survey page where you want to add the image. Click Map and layout.

  2. Choose 'Background image' as the page type. Click New to add the image from your computer. The recommended dimensions for the image are max. 1920×1080 (the most common laptop screen size), min. 1280×800 (budget laptop screen size).

  4. Preview the page! Remember that background images won't be visible to respondents using their smart phones to answer (if you want them to see it, add it to the survey form).
Interactive image

'Interactive image' is a background image that respondents can draw or place pins on, just like on a map.

Before you use an interactive image

  • Think about how you want to use the data collected with this survey. Image files have pixels, not coordinates, and thus it is very difficult to export the data to any GIS software. You can always look at the data in Maptionnaire's built-in analysis tool (example in the image below).
  • Consider georeferencing the image (layering it on top of a digital map) or uploading it in vector format (e.g. shp) instead.

  3. The image should now be visible on the right side of the editor. Set the view you want respondents to see when they enter the survey and click Set under Default view to save it.
