Add maps to your questionnaire

  1. When you add a new page to your survey, select Map page. Navigate to the page's Map and layout tag.

  2. Select the map(s) that you want to use on this page:

You will need at least a basemap to ask map questions. You can select any of the maps in the drop-down menu (all OpenStreetMap based).

If you have your own basemap you'd like to use, such as a WMS/WMTS, Mapbox or Esri Vector Tile Service map, click New+ to add it.

The maps that you bring to Maptionnaire will be stored in Materials. Once uploaded, you can use them in any survey you create.

  3. If you want, you can add Map overlays, such as shapefiles or geoJSONs that contain for example borders, routes or points. Click New+ to add the file or to create it from scratch.

You can also layer images (e.g. plans) on the map

  4. Edit the legend.

  5. Set the starting location by clicking Set. The 'target' symbol tells you what the centerpoint of the view (it's not visible for respondents).

If the survey is about a large area (e.g. city or state), consider if adding 'zoom shortcuts' could help respondents navigate.

  6. Preview the page! Remember to also check what the survey looks like on a phone.
  7. If you want to copy the same style for other pages, click the three dots next to the map's name and select Add to all pages. You can also return to edit any of the map layers from this menu, or hide them from initial view on the map (respondents will be able to select them from the map).
